Here’s the AHIP report on electronic claims (pdf). It includes some different numbers on the cost of claims: a clean electronic claim costs 85 cents, a clean paper claim costs $1.58, and a pending claim requiring manual review costs about $2.05 (it isn’t clear whether or not that last average is for paper, electronic, or both). Absolute values are a lot less than the numbers I had, but the proportions are about right and there’s still a lot of cash on the table.
